5 Facts on Surprise Cake from Shark Tank

  • by

Many people love celebrating occasions with food, especially dessert. Whether it’s a birthday or a graduation party, one food is usually at the forefront: cake. Delicious flavor, yummy icing, and fun for the whole family, cake has been a staple for ages. But what if there was a way to make it even more entertaining? That’s precisely what Surprise Cake has been doing, and with a pitch on Shark Tank this week, they don’t plan on stopping. Keep reading below for more info on the new, cool product.

Details on Surprise Cake

1) Surprise Cake was invented by Liz Charm and her son, Jordan Long. Liz’s background is in baking; Jordan’s is in engineering. Sounds like the perfect team to construct a “jack-in-the-box” for cakes, right?

2) It’s a gift pod that hides a surprise in your cake, waiting until the right moment before it pops out, thereby surprising the people too. Liz told BAKE Mag that the idea came to her after her daughter’s birthday, where she wanted to hide the cell phone inside the cake. It’d been a tradition in Liz’s family — the element of surprise — so she wanted to continue it.

3) Even though you can’t actually place non-edible items inside food (safety requirements don’t allow it), that didn’t stop Liz and Jordan. They created the illusion that whatever item will pop out of the cake using a plastic tube. The cake is sitting on a pop stand, which is what tricks the eye into thinking the surprise is going to pop up.

4) You can order the plastic tube separately to use in presents or other gift ideas. On their website, you can buy the whole set, a musical trigger (much like a jack-in-the-box music), a cupcake kit, cake topper, and even surprise sprinkles.

5) You can purchase the popping cake stand on Amazon, and apparently you should “stay tuned for updates” regarding if they’ll be selling cupcakes or cakes of their own. Maybe one of the sharks can help them out with that?
