Update on Shark Tank’s Tranquilo

Tranquilo is the vibrating baby mat meant to soothe infants. It appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank during season 8. Founder Melissa Gersin used her experience as a maternity nurse to invent it. Even though she made a deal on the show with Robert Herjavec, it doesn’t appear the deal closed. But, that didn’t stop Melissa. See what she’s been up to since the show below. We’ve got five facts on her product’s journey.

What happened with Tranquilo from Shark Tank?

1) Melissa Gersin worked as a maternity nurse for years in Massachusetts. She used this experience to help her invent the vibrating baby mat. According to Shark Tank Blog, she used motion and soothing sounds to “mimic life in the womb.” This is what helps babies calm down and fuss less.

It appears the Tranquilo mat is on Amazon but is shown as “currently available.” It received 3.3 out of 5 stars with 220 ratings.

One of the top reviews said, “My baby would not sleep unless he was on my chest. Since purchasing this mat a month ago, he sleeps in his bassinet every night and for longer and longer stretches. He is 8 wks old now and slept 6 hours straight last night! This product is definitely worth the price!”

The most negative review said this: “ wanted to love this so, so bad! I love that it’s a small start-up company!
We were having a horrible time transferring our baby from the rock n play (which has now been recalled… We can’t catch a break!!) to his bassinet. He would NOT sleep in the Halo bassinet, a mini pack and play, or his crib. The four month sleep regression hit us hard and I had to go back to work a little before 5 months. I researched every sleep product and read a few books cover to cover (Precious Little Sleep is the best!!!). NOTHING would work. We went from a very sleepy newborn to an infant who only wanted to sleep on our chests or sometimes in the rock n play. I was so hopeful about this mat. I hate to leave a bad review but it did absolutely nothing. It made 0 difference. Also, it’s tiny and we got the biggest one. There’s no way a baby who moved can stay on it!! And it was so expensive! Sleep is so important and you cannot put a price tag on it, so it was worth a try. But I’m sad to say we ended up returning it. Now at 6 months, after A LOT of research, trial and error, and a few tears our baby sleeps through the night!!!” See the rest of the review on Amazon.

2) When she went into the tank, she asked for $100,000 for 10%. In the end, it was Robert who offered her $200,000 for 15%, which Melissa accepted. Unfortunately, her company’s not listed on Robert’s website, so it looks like the deal didn’t pan out.

3) Even though the Shark Tank deal didn’t work, Melissa didn’t stop with her product. She reworked some business strategy, and continued to market her baby mat. She eventually got it into buybuyBABY, and other small children’s retailers.

4) While it doesn’t appear Melissa’s “Tranquilo Mat” is available anymore, if you go to her Twitter page and click the link for one of their newer products, you’ll be directed to baby brezza.

According to BabyBrezza.com you will see the company does the following. “Baby Brezza has been saving parents 30 minutes per day for years! Because our products use less parts, require less effort, and make clean-up a breeze, we make feeding and nurturing your baby easier and simpler.”
